Before This Blog

After deciding the theme, we had to come up with a bunch of names to put on the spooky jars.  I remembered a couple of things from the witches’ speech in Macbeth. “Double double toil and trouble, Fire burn and cauldron bubble”.  When we looked up the speech we found lots of great ideas for the apothecary jars.  We are omitting every item that includes anything human but otherwise, we now have our ingredients list!  Plus the boy child was so inspired, he is memorizing the speech.

I googled ‘witches apothecary’ and found many web sites that told me what to use for the jars, how to make authentic olde tyme labels (a 7 step process), what to put in them, and how to seal them.  Some people have even MORE time on their hands than I do!

We made about 10 ghosts from a long piece of white fabric with the heads stuffed with the foam wrappers that come around all delicate fruit here. We will hang them up in our trees.

We looked at what was available through Oriental Trading. They actually ship to Japan! We will be ordering 1000 bat rings, some spider webs and perhaps some eyeball lights.

I interviewed and selected about 20 stuffed animals to put on the shelves with the jars.  Preference was given to cats, rats, bats and reptiles and anyone who was orange, black or purple.  This will be the kinder, gentler, witches apothecary.

I bought 2 bags of lollipops from Costco (600)!  And will buy more the next time I am there.

I bought 10 meters of cool, sheer black fabric at the last sale at TOA (10 meters for 105 yen…roughly a dollar).  I think the fabric will go on top of the shelves along with a very large Ikea dragon.

We will empty out the 4 bookcases that currently house all our DVDs and take them outside as the base furniture for the apothecary.  They are brown particle board but I don’t think my husband will tolerate me attempting to paint them black.  Or paint faux stone work.  With little tiny mice silhouettes.  And use his spare computer cables to fashion spiders with the hot glue gun.  It is SO easy to get carried away.

We have started collecting, washing and delabeling any large size jar. And started collecting any kind of junk that matches with the witches ingredient list.
